Regional Premiere of the Film SUPPORTING ROLE

A retired Georgian film star embarks on a cathartic journey of self-transformation after accepting a bizarre and unsympathetic supporting role in a young director's debut feature.

The regional premiere of the film SUPPORTING ROLE by director Ana Urushadze took place tonight at the National Theatre. The film is screened as part of the Competition Programme – Narrative Feature Film. Urushadze is well known to the Sarajevo audience, having won the Heart of Sarajevo for her debut feature SCARY MOTHER at the 23rd Sarajevo Film Festival.

SUPPORTING ROLE is her second feature film, which world-premiered in the Tiger Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2026, when it won the Special Jury Award and the FIPRESCI Prize.

A retired Georgian film star, once accustomed to playing heroic leading roles, embarks on a cathartic journey after a casting session with a young female director, who offers him the supporting role of a bizarre and deeply unsympathetic character in her debut feature. He leaves the audition unconvinced, even slightly offended. Yet as the story unfolds, he gradually surrenders to the role, becoming captivated by the strange and the unknown. The experience awakens something within him, setting in motion an irreversible process of self-transformation.
