Rodrigo Sorogoyen: It Is Extremely Important to Understand Each Other More Deeply

Rodrigo Sorogoyen's film THE BELOVED was screened in the Open Air programme tonight. The screening, held at the Coca-Cola Open Air Cinema, was also attended by the film's director, Rodrigo Sorogoyen.

 

"Tonight, for the first time, we have the great pleasure of hosting Rodrigo Sorogoyen in Sarajevo and at the Sarajevo Film Festival. Over the past decade, Rodrigo has become one of the most recognizable filmmakers in European cinema. From the Oscar-nominated films 'The Realm’ and 'Mother' to the Cannes premiere and international success 'Beasts', his films have established a very recognizable style. They are incredibly precise, often tense, and intense, but always driven by characters and outstanding performances. 'Beasts' is perhaps the film that has brought all this together. It has won nine Goya Awards, including Best Film, Director and Screenplay, as well as the César for Best Foreign Film. And now, with the film 'The Beloved’, Rodrigo Sorogoyen has taken another step forward," said Jovan Marjanović, director of Sarajevo Film Festival.

 

Speaking about Sorogoyen's latest work, Marjanović pointed out that the whole story is based on a simple premise. However, from that simple premise, Sorogoyen and his longtime screenwriting partner Isabel Peña have created something much more complex.

 

"It's a deeply emotional film about a father and daughter, but also about filmmaking, power, trust and the sometimes dangerous line between life and art. At the center of the film are two outstanding performances. Javier Bardem is charismatic, unpredictable, and sometimes terrifying, while Victoria Luengo is wonderfully subtle and precise. Rodrigo gives them space, and the balance between the two constantly shifts throughout the film. We've long admired Rodrigo's work, so I'm especially happy that tonight, at our biggest festival location, we can finally welcome you to Sarajevo. Rodrigo, welcome to Sarajevo!", concluded Marjanović.

 

"I was here 15 years ago and had a great time. That's why I'm happy to do it again, especially with an experience like this. So I am very glad to be able to share this film with you. 'The Beloved' is a film about the importance of searching for people with similar worldviews and destinies. It is extremely important that through close perspectives we understand each other more deeply," said Sorogoyen to a large audience at the Coca-Cola Open Air Cinema.

 

Tomorrow, Monday, August 17, Rodrigo Sorogoyen will hold a masterclass at the Festival Center (Bosnian Cultural Center), starting at 10 am.
