Charlotte Rampling Guest of the Sarajevo Film Festival

Sarajevo Film Festival has a great pleasure to announce that one of the greatest actress of our time, Charlotte Rampling is curating the Katrin Cartlidge Foundation Award for 2011. Prominent actress will join us in Sarajevo to present this year's Katrin Cartlidge Foundation award winner. Rampling has intimated that she will award a young filmmaker from the Arab world.

Charlotte Rampling will also present to Sarajevo audience film MELANCHOLIA by Lars von Trier in which she plays Gaby, a woman based on the director's own mother.

Charlotte Rampling began her career in films in 1964 with Richard Lester in THE KNACK. In 1966 she appeared as Meredith in the film GEORGY GIRL and after this her acting career blossomed in both English, French and Italian cinema. Rampling has often performed controversial roles. In 1969, in Luchino Visconti's THE DAMNED (LA CADUTA DEGLI DEI) and in Liliana Cavani’s 1974 film THE NIGHT PORTER, playing alongside Dirk Bogarde.

She gained recognition from American audiences in a remake of Raymond Chandler's detective story FAREWELL, MY LOVELY (1975) and later with Woody Allen's STARDUST MEMORIES (1980) and particularly in THE VERDICT (1982), an acclaimed drama directed by Sidney Lumet that starred Paul Newman. Her long list of films also includes Alan Parker’s ANGEL HEART, Ian Softly’s THE WINGS OF THE DOVE, Michael Cacoyannis THE CHERRY ORCHARD, Julio Medem’s CAOTICA ANA and Domink Moll’s LEMMING.

Charlotte has collaborated extensively with the director Francois Ozon appearing in the UNDER THE SAND (2001), SWIMMING POOL (2003) and most recently ANGEL (2006). She also starred in Laurent Cantet's HEADING SOUTH (VERS LE SUD), a 2005 film about female sexual tourism.

Recent films include: I, ANNA, MELANCHOLIA, THE EYE OF THE STORM, STREETDANCE 3D, NEVER LET ME GO, BABYLON AD, LIFE DURING WARTIME, BOOGIE WOOGIE & THE DUCHESS.

Among many other awards Charlotte Rampling received Honorary Cesar, European Film Academy Award for Best Actress (SWIMMING POOL), Lifetime Achievement Award of Stockholm Film Festival.

KATRIN CARTLIDGE FOUNDATION

In 2010, Haiti suffered a devastating earthquake, and the Foundation chose to give the Annual Award to the young and the only Haitian film school, Ciné Institute Jacmel. Young Haitian filmmaker Kesiah Jean came to the Sarajevo Film Festival to collect the award for her school.

Last month David Belle, the film school’s founder said: “The grant from the Katrin Cartlidge Foundation has enabled Haiti’s new generation of filmmakers to begin realizing their dreams. We are using this cherished funding to finance two films and, in doing so, we are bringing the hard work of our students to life and sharing their stories with the world.”

Motivated by Katrin’s all too brief but inspiring presence, the Foundation’s work is to give new voices, new perspectives and visions a chance to be seen and heard. For the last eight years the Foundation has appointed a curator, selected from Katrin’s eclectic and extensive friends and colleagues, who in turn chooses a recipient for the annual bursary. The recipient is a new cinematic voice whose work, in some way, embodies Katrin’s integrity of spirit and commitment to independent film. We are grateful for the generosity and vision of our curators to date; The actors Emily Watson and Stellan Skarsgard, directors Mike Leigh, Simon McBurney and Danis Tanovic, as well as John Lyons, Annie Nocenti and photographer Juergen Teller.

The recipient is presented with the Award, a cash bursary, at a special red carpet gala at the Sarajevo Film Festival in July. This unique and important Film Festival has proved an integral partner for the Foundation, providing a strong and supportive platform for the Annual Award.

The Foundation, through it’s trustees and patrons, also commits to helping the young filmmakers however they can, with practical and creative support.

KATRIN CARTLIDGE AWARD WINNERS

Juanita Wilson (2009 – Stellan Skarsgard) was nominated for an Academy Award for her short film THE DOOR in 2010, and has completed her first feature AS IF I’M NOT THERE, which premiered at Toronto Film Festival. She was named among Variety’s top ten directors to watch in 2011 – the only woman on the list.

Faruk Šabanović (2008 – Danis Tanovic) has won numerous international awards and is currently in production for BIRDS LIKE US, Bosnia’s first 3D animated feature.

Cary Fukunaga (2007 – John Lyons) won a student Academy Award for his short film VICTORIA PARA CHINO and has since gone on to direct the acclaimed SIN NOMBRE for Focus Features and JANE EYRE for Ruby Films.

Eyas Salman (2006 – Simon McBurney and Juergen Teller) is developing his first feature film THE BASTARD and teaching film editing at the Nazareth Academic Institute. Gerd Schneider – with whom Eyas shared the bursary – is also developing his own first feature film, THE RESPONSIBLES, which was nominated for a screenplay award at the Berlin Film Festival.

Amy Neil (2005 – Emily Watson) has just completed a new short film THE CHILD, based on an Ali Smith short story, for BBC Film Network, and is developing a feature with the UK’s Warp Films.

Greg Hall (2004 – Mike Leigh) has made two further low budget feature films – KAPITAL and SSDD.
