Academy Award for Nicolas Schmerkin
The longstanding selector of the Sarajevo Film Festival New Currents - Short Films, producer Nicolas Schmerkin is the recipient of this year's Academy Award for Best Short Animated Film - LOGORAMA Schmerkin was presented with this award on Sunday night at a American Film Academy awards gala.
The film LOGORAMA is the work of directors François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy and Ludovic Houplain, and was, as Schmerkin pointed out in his acceptance speech, six years in the making.
Nicolas Schmerkin has also made a great contribution to SFF's New Currents Programme, who he has been developing for years with prominent producer, Philippe Bober. Schmerkin also took over as editor of the New Currents short film selection when it was established during the 7th Sarajevo Film Festival, and held this position until the end of the 13th Sarajevo Film Festival.
Two years ago, he decided to dedicate his efforts entirely to the production of shorts, which has so far brought him great success. When announcing his professional path in film, Schmerkin said he hopes that he would one day come to the Sarajevo Film Festival as a guest to present one of his own films.
Another Sarajevo Film Festival guest was also a laureate at this year's awards, which gives us great pride here in BiH - producer Greg Shapiro won an Oscar for his work on the film THE HURT LOCKER which also won Oscars in five other categories.
