Peruvian filmmaker Juan Alejandro Ramirez is the poet of the downtrodden, as he has proven in earlier Panorama presentations like PORTER. In this film, technically a fiction but in reality the appropriation of a true story told in documentary style, a woman in Lima, who has decided to kill herself, relates in voiceover the hardships she has encountered, from poverty to rejection. Ramirez has her reenact episodes of a life gone every which way but right. Ramirez's inimitable style might be termed aestheticized melancholy. (H. F.)
