In a time of war, human beings are not the only casualties. When Serbian Nationalist forces laid siege to Sarajevo in Bosnia, they destroyed great institutions of culture in an attempt to wipe out a country's past. The museum was hit, then the Oriental Institute and then the National Library. Only one Library remained. This is a story of culture and history under fire. It tells of the heroic efforts of a group of book lovers who risked their lives to save the Gazi Huzrav Beg Library from destruction. Using first hand testimony and dramatic reconstruction, the film is a gripping tale of wartime Sarajevo, and also of the importance of books to the identity of a nation and a people.
