The Morelia International Film Festival (FICM)

The Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) is delighted to strengthen and develop its partnership with the Sarajevo Film Festival in 2015. Aside from being one of the most important film festivals in Europe - boasting an outstanding programme of films each year - Sarajevo itself holds a vital position in the world of international cinema, being home to Béla Tarr’s renowned Film Factory, which offers film courses to talented filmmakers from around the world, including some young Mexican directors.

In 2014 Mexico was the guest country at the festival’s 20th edition, which included a program of some of the best of Mexican cinema from recent years, including Alonso Ruizpalacios’ GÜEROS (2014), José Luis Valle’s WORKERS (2013), Diego Quemada-Diez’s LA JAULA DE ORO (2013), Alejandro González Iñárritu’s AMORES PERROS / LOVE’S A BITCH (2000), and a selection of short films from the 11th edition of FICM. The festival also welcomed Gael Garcia Bernal as its honorary guest and recipient of the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award.

This year, the festivals will participate in an exchange; an award-winning film from the Sarajevo Film Festival will be screened at the 12th edition of FICM in October; while audiences in Sarajevo will have the opportunity to enjoy Rigoberto Pérezcano’s CARMIN TROPICAL, winner of the Best Feature Film Award in Morelia last year.

Pérezcano’s film, which was also nominated for nine Ariel awards, winning the prize for Best Screenplay, is a nuanced exploration of gender, violence and family ties, focusing on a community of transgender women in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca.

The Sarajevo Film Festival offers an outstanding example of original, quality programming to the international film community. Our festivals share a key aim: to promote the work of local filmmakers whilst at the same time celebrating the best of a diverse range of world cinema. We are delighted to continue working closely with the festival, allowing our mutual passions to consolidate an ongoing and mutually beneficial relationship.
