DAMIR ŠAGOLJ, Journalist, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Damir Šagolj's photographs have been published by leading magazines and newspapers (Time, Newsweek, Spiegel, Stern, New York Times, Life, Washington Post, Le Monde…). He is the recipient of several international awards for photojournalism including World Press Photo, POYi, NPPA... He has had numerous exhibitions, including a big solo show at Visa D’or in Perpignan.
His coverage of the of the area was, among other awards, nominated for the Pulitzer Prize as only the second reporter for non-American media in the history of that prize.
In 1995, Damir Sagolj started working with the Paris-based Sipa Press agency, and in 1997 he became Reuters Bosnia chief photographer.
His first international assignments were the historical events in The Balkans. As the situation in The Balkans was calming down, he started traveling to the Middle East more often - Iran, Lebanon and Israel. After 9/11, which he covered in NYC, he moved to Afghanistan and Iraq.
He has covered many elections, civil disturbances, anniversaries, summits; he followed the Pope and other world leaders, the Japanese tsunami, Pakistan and Thailand floods, hunger crisis in North Korea, the war crimes tribunal in the Hague, democratic changes in Myanmar... He is currently based in Bangkok as the Reuters chief photographer for Thailand and Indochina.
